Tokyo Opera City celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, and the highlight of the summer is a one-night outdoor singing contest on August 7. Staged in the venue's Sunken Garden — the open-air plaza that sits one level below street, framed by the concert hall tower and the Hatsudai skyline — the event invites selected contestants to perform in front of a live summer audience.
The contest is one of a series of 30th anniversary events at Tokyo Opera City, the cultural complex that opened in 1996 in Nishi-Shinjuku and combines the Concert Hall, Recital Hall and galleries around a central plaza. The Sunken Garden has long been used for free outdoor summer concerts, and this year it becomes a stage for a competitive singing format.
The event is free to attend and begins at 17:00. The Sunken Garden is a 5-minute walk from Hatsudai Station on the Keio New Line, or about 10 minutes from the south exit of Shinjuku Station. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis — arrive early to grab a spot on the garden steps. Combine the visit with a walk through the neighbouring Shinjuku Central Park, which holds its own beer garden event through the summer evenings.
