About Hanazono Shrine

Hanazono Shrine is older than the neon around it. The shrine stood in Shinjuku before Tokugawa Ieyasu moved to Edo. It sat near today’s Isetan until the Kan’ei years, then moved onto the garden of an Owari Tokugawa lower residence, which is where the name Hanazono comes from. Enshrined are Ukanomitama, Yamato Takeru, and Ukemochi. People who work in Kabukicho still treat it as the neighbourhood shrine. Reitaisai falls on the Saturday–Monday nearest 28 May. Tori no Ichi on the Rooster days in November is one of the largest kumade markets in Kanto. Hatsumode fills the grounds on 1–3 January. Shinjuku-sanchome E2 opens onto the precinct. JR East Exit is about seven minutes. There is no car park. Golden Gai is next door. This is a shrine. Do not type it as a mall.
