Golden Gai

About Golden Gai

Golden Gai is a grid of wooden two-storey bars, roughly 290 shops, between Hanazono Shrine and Shinjuku City Office. The Shinjuku Sanko Shopping Street Promotion Association (goldengai.jp) is the body for Sanko / Hanazono-gai. A second association covers the rest of the grid. Their map was updated 4 April 2026. The alleys are private roads. The association says any photography that takes the street as its subject needs a permit. Do not tell visitors to shoot the lanes as if they were a public theme park. Many bars seat a handful of people and add a cover. Regulars still exist. Weekend nights are heavy with visitors. Eat in Omoide Yokocho or elsewhere first. Come here after 21:00 for a drink. Office hours of the association: Wednesday–Friday and odd-week Saturdays 14:00–20:00, 03-3209-6418.
