About This Event / イベントについて
The Geino Yamashirogumi Kecak Festival is one of Shinjuku's main summer events, returning for its 48th edition in 2026. Across five days, the courtyard of the Shinjuku Mitsui Building transforms into a Balinese cultural stage, with around 100 performers presenting the hypnotic choral dance drama known as Kecak.
Kecak is performed around a burning light, with dancers in traditional masks and costumes moving to a rhythmic human chorus — no instruments, just layered voices. The festival also features the Balinese bamboo percussion orchestra Jegog, a taiko drum performance, a Georgian traditional chorus, a Bulgarian folk choir, and a live performance of Symphonic Suite Akira combining human voices with electronic instruments.
Founded in 1976 by Akira Yajima as a resistance to Japan's rush toward modern Western culture, the festival celebrates living tradition. The 2026 theme is "A Festive Space Where Living Brains Outshine AI." All performances are free and begin at dusk.
