About This Event / イベントについて
The Shinjuku Eisa Festival is Japan's largest urban Eisa event, transforming the streets around JR Shinjuku Station into a spectacular stage for Okinawan drum dance. Now in its 23rd year, the festival draws around 24 troupes and up to 800,000 spectators for an unforgettable summer evening.
Eisa is a traditional Okinawan dance performed during the Bon Festival to honor ancestral spirits. Dancers move in formation, beating taiko drums, clashing hand cymbals, and singing folk songs. The rhythmic energy is infectious — even casual passersby find themselves drawn into the spectacle.
The festival was first held in 2002 and has grown every year since, becoming one of Shinjuku's signature summer events. It represents the growing Okinawan community in Tokyo and their cultural pride, bringing the warmth and spirit of the islands to the heart of the metropolis.
