About This Event / イベントについて
Every year in early August, Hanazono Shrine holds its Bon Odori dance festival, offering a rare chance to join traditional circle dancing right in the heart of Shinjuku's Kabukicho district.
Bon Odori is a traditional Japanese folk dance performed during the Obon season to welcome and honor ancestral spirits. Dancers move in a circle around a raised wooden stage (yagura) where musicians play taiko drums and shamisen. Anyone can join — just follow the person in front of you and move to the rhythm.
The shrine grounds fill with food stalls selling yakisoba, takoyaki, kakigori (shaved ice), and cold beer. The contrast between the ancient shrine lanterns and the neon of Kabukicho just steps away makes this one of Tokyo's most atmospheric summer nights.
