Suwa Shrine in Nishi-Waseda holds its annual grand festival (Reitaisai) on August 23 and 24, 2026. The two-day Shinto festival is one of the larger late-summer shrine celebrations in Shinjuku Ward, with the shrine grounds filling with food stalls, festival music and parishioners from morning until night.
2026 is a special year: it marks the Gosinko Taisai, the once-a-decade great procession in which the shrine's mikoshi (portable shrine) leaves the grounds and tours the entire parishioner district. On August 24, the mikoshi procession departs the shrine at 8:30 and returns around 17:00, accompanied by priests, attendants and local parishioners in traditional dress.
Food stalls run roughly 12:00–21:00 on both days, and the festival goes ahead rain or shine. The shrine also issues a limited-edition goshuin (red seal stamp) and special amulets — katc-mori (victory amulet) and koi-mori (love amulet) — only during the festival period. Suwa Shrine is a 3-minute walk from Nishi-Waseda Station on the Tozai Line, or a 10-minute walk from Takadanobaba Station.
