About This Event / イベントについて
The Tori-no-Ichi at Hanazono Shrine is one of Shinjuku's most atmospheric autumn events, with a history stretching back to the Edo period. Held on the "day of the rooster" (酉の日) in November — twice in 2026, on November 7 and November 19 — it is a festival praying for good fortune, prosperous business, and a bountiful harvest in the coming year.
The heart of the fair is the sale of kumade (熊手, "bear-paw" rakes) — elaborately decorated bamboo rakes adorned with masks, coins, treasure ships, and auspicious symbols. The idea is that the rake "rakes in" wealth and luck. Each year buyers upgrade to a slightly larger kumade, symbolizing growing fortune, and a lively tejime (hand-clapping ritual) seals each purchase between buyer and seller.
The shrine precincts and surrounding streets fill with hundreds of yatai food stalls and open-air vendors. Taiko drumming sounds at midnight to mark the opening, and the fair runs deep into the night — the crowd is thickest after sunset. It's a vivid mix of solemn tradition and street-fair energy right in the heart of Shinjuku.
花園神社の酉の市は、江戸時代から続く新宿の秋を代表する風物詩です。11月の「酉の日」（2026年は11月7日と11月19日の2回）に開催され、商売繁盛、五穀豊穣、家内安全を願う祭りです。
市の中心は熊手（「熊の手」の形の装飾熊手）の販売です。お面、小判、宝船、縁起物で飾られた竹熊手は、富や幸運を「かき集める」縁起物。毎年少し大きいものに買い替えて縁起を上り詰める習わしで、購入時には買い手と売り手で手締めが行われます。
境内と周辺の通りには何百もの屋台と露天が並びます。真夜中に太鼓の合図で開幕し、夜遅くまで開かれ、日没後が最も賑わいます。厳かな伝統と市の賑わいが新宿の中心で交差します。
