Sumikko Gurashi Exhibition at Keio Department Store Shinjuku, July 17-30, 2026

From July 17 to 30, 2026, the touring Sumikko Gurashi Exhibition: Meshiagare, Sumikko Restaurant opens at Keio Department Store Shinjuku, 7th floor main event hall. The exhibition runs daily from 10:00 to 20:00, with the final day, July 30, closing at 17:00. Admission is free. The theme is a restaurant, and the Sumikko Gurashi characters appear throughout the hall dressed as menu items and waitstaff.

Sumikko Gurashi, the San-X character brand born in 2012, is one of the most consistently popular mascot lines in Japan. The characters share one defining trait: they are creatures who like the corner, "sumikko" in Japanese, because the corner is where they feel safe. The exhibition takes that premise and applies it to a restaurant setting. The hall is designed to feel like walking into a real restaurant, with the Sumikko characters appearing as food, waiters, and decor. The 2026 touring edition uses the subtitle "Meshiagare," a polite Japanese phrase meaning "please eat," reinforcing the food-service framing.

The restaurant concept and photo spots

The exhibition is built around photo opportunities rather than rides or performances. The Sumikko characters appear in poses themed to the restaurant setting: as menu items they have tried hard to become, as waitstaff, and as decor. The official description calls the displays "photogenic" and notes that the food-themed Sumikko are designed to make visitors hungry. Photo spots are spread across the hall, and the layout is meant for slow walking with a phone camera. The exhibition suits families with small children and adult Sumikko fans in roughly equal measure.

Limited goods at the shop corner

The exhibition includes a shop corner selling touring-edition-only goods. The merchandise is themed to the restaurant concept, meaning the characters appear in the restaurant costumes specific to this exhibition, not in their usual designs. The line-up includes plush toys, stationery, and household goods. San-X notes these are goods that "cannot be encountered outside the touring exhibition," which is the standard framing for touring character exhibitions in Japan and the reason the shop corner draws long queues on opening weekend. If merchandise is the priority, go on a weekday morning. The exhibition itself is free, but the shop is where money is spent.

Why Keio Department Store Shinjuku is the venue

Keio Department Store Shinjuku sits at 1-1-4 Nishi-Shinjuku, directly above Shinjuku Station's west exit, on the Keio Line terminal. The store is one of the few department-store venues in Tokyo that can host a touring character exhibition of this scale with direct station access, no outdoor walk, and a 7th-floor event hall large enough for a themed walkthrough. The 2026 exhibition dates overlap with the start of Japanese school summer holidays, which is the standard scheduling pattern for family-targeted character exhibitions in Tokyo. Keio Shinjuku is the first stop on this exhibition's touring schedule.

What "Sumikko Gurashi" means, briefly

For visitors unfamiliar with the characters, the Sumikko Gurashi line centres on a small group of creatures, including Polar Bear, Penguin (who is unsure if he is actually a penguin), Tonkatsu (a leftover piece of pork cutlet), Neko (a shy cat), and Tokage (a lizard who hides). The brand's appeal rests on the characters' shared preference for corners, a metaphor for the mild social anxiety that the brand's adult fan base identifies with. The restaurant-themed exhibition reframes this as the characters trying on new roles, which is the format that has made previous Sumikko touring exhibitions successful in Tokyo.

How to plan the visit

The exhibition runs for two weeks, which gives flexibility. The opening weekend, July 17-19, will be the densest, and includes a Sunday and a Marine Day public holiday on July 20. The final day, July 30, closes at 17:00 sharp, earlier than the rest of the run. The 7th floor main event hall is one level above Keio Shinjuku's standard retail floors, and the escalator queue at opening time (10:00) on weekends is the main bottleneck. Arrive at 10:30 on a weekend or before 12:00 on a weekday to avoid the line.

Admission is free, which makes this exhibition one of the lowest-cost family-friendly summer activities in Shinjuku. The only cost is the shop, which is optional. The exhibition is indoors, which matters in July: Tokyo summer afternoons are routinely 32 to 35 degrees Celsius with high humidity, and a free indoor character exhibition is a legitimate reason to plan a Shinjuku visit around the middle of the day.
