Shinjuku Chuo Park Summer Festival 2026: Beer Gardens and Bon Odori in Nishi-Shinjuku
On July 17-18 and July 24-25, 2026, Shinjuku Chuo Park in Nishi-Shinjuku opens four nights of summer programming under the banner of the Mizu to Midori no EVENING BAR beer garden event. Running from 16:00 to 21:00 each evening, the park's open space fills with kitchen trucks, draft beer taps, and a small stage that hosts three to four performances per night from 17:00. Admission is free, and the event is open to walk-ins with no ticket. A separate bon odori festival runs at the same park in late August, but the July dates are the beer-garden-and-live-music programming.
The festival is one of the few large-format summer events in Nishi-Shinjuku, the cluster of skyscrapers around the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Most summer festivals in Shinjuku Ward take place on closed streets or in temple grounds. Shinjuku Chuo Park is the rare one that uses an actual park lawn, which means you can sit on grass, drink a draft beer, and watch the skyline of the Twin Towers and the Park Hyatt light up as the sun drops behind them.
The EVENING BAR format: kitchen trucks and live music
The event is built on the Mizu to Midori no EVENING BAR (Water and Green EVENING BAR) format, a recurring beer-garden series the park has run across multiple summer weekends. Food comes from rotating kitchen trucks, the kind of mobile stalls known in Japan as kitchen cars, and the 2026 version adds a stage programme from 17:00 with three to four acts per night. The acts include kitchen-car idol performances and acoustic guitar sets, a deliberately casual line-up that matches the sitting-on-grass-with-a-beer setting.
The beer is the main reason people come. The park management runs the bar with local breweries and food vendors, and the price point is aimed at the office workers who pour out of the surrounding towers at 18:00. The evening hours, 16:00 to 21:00, are designed so you can drop in after work, eat, drink, and be home before the last train.
The four July dates and how they differ
The festival runs on two consecutive weekends, not as a continuous run. The dates are July 17 (Friday) and 18 (Saturday), then July 24 (Friday) and 25 (Saturday). The Friday sessions skew toward the after-work crowd. The Saturday sessions skew toward families and couples. The July 25 Saturday overlaps with the Shinjuku Eisa Festival on Shinjuku-dori and the Sarabanji Music Fes at SANAGI Shinjuku, which means a visitor on that day can do an eisa performance on the main street at 14:00, catch Okinawan pop at SANAGI at 16:00, and end the night at the Chuo Park beer garden from 19:00. It is the densest single day of summer programming in Shinjuku.
The bon odori connection: a separate August event
It is worth clarifying what this festival is and is not. The Shinjuku Chuo Park summer bon odori proper, organised by the Shinjuku City Kakunoshi District Youth Development Committee, runs separately on August 22 and 23, 2026, and is a co-held event with the park's main summer festival. The four July dates covered here are the beer-garden-and-music EVENING BAR series, which is a different programme under the same park management. Visitors who specifically want to dance bon odori at Chuo Park should plan for August, not July.
Who this suits and how to get there
The EVENING BAR beer garden suits three audiences: after-work office groups from the Nishi-Shinjuku towers, families with children who want a lawn-and-food-truck evening, and visitors who want a beer in the open air without paying a festival premium. The park is a 2-minute walk from Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line, which puts you directly under the Metropolitan Government Building. From JR Shinjuku Station it is a 10-minute walk west through the skyscraper district. There is no entry fee and no ticket, but bring cash for the food trucks, as card payment at the trucks is inconsistent.
