Ginza Kimuraya Sohonten is the historic bakery that invented anpan in 1869, with a counter at Isetan Shinjuku's basement food hall. Founded by former samurai Yasubei Kimura as Bun'eido in the first year of the Meiji era, the bakery created anpan, the sweet red bean bun, by wrapping traditional sweet bean paste in bread dough, and it has been credited with introducing bread culture to Japan.
The Isetan Shinjuku counter offers the bakery's signature sake-kasu anpan, made using a natural yeast starter derived from sake lees, alongside sweet breads, savoury breads and loaf breads. Limited-edition items such as the chewy rice bread are released periodically, and the counter is known for introducing seasonal varieties that reflect the Japanese appreciation for changing flavours through the year.
The counter is located on the first basement floor of Isetan Shinjuku's main building and is open from 10:00 to 20:00 daily. As one of the most popular bakery counters in the Isetan depachika, signature items often sell out by early afternoon, so morning visits are recommended for the best selection of anpan varieties.
