Torien is a well-established yakitori and seafood izakaya situated at 1-2-4 Nishishinjuku within the iconic Shinjuku Nishiguchi Omoide Yokocho. As one of the largest establishments in the alley, it has become a go-to destination for visitors wanting to experience the retro Showa-era atmosphere that defines this historic drinking quarter. The narrow alley setting, with its smoke, chatter, and clinking glasses, provides an authentic Tokyo izakaya experience that contrasts sharply with the sleek towers of Nishi-Shinjuku above. The menu offers an extensive 120 items, with yakitori skewers grilled over charcoal being the centrepiece. The signature shamoji tsukune, a chicken meatball shaped on a rice spoon, is a house speciality that draws repeat customers. Beyond yakitori, the kitchen prepares seafood dishes using seasonal ingredients, ensuring variety across the four seasons. The drinks menu covers standard izakaya fare including beer, shochu, and sake, all at reasonable prices that suit the casual, convivial atmosphere. The shop also caters for parties, which is unusual for the typically tiny Omoide Yokocho establishments. Torien is just two to three minutes on foot from JR Shinjuku Station's west exit and equally close to Shinjuku-nishiguchi Station on the Oedo line. Hours run from 12:00 to 23:40 with last orders at 23:10, and the shop closes only on 1 January. The midday opening makes it one of the few Omoide Yokocho spots that welcomes daytime visitors alongside the evening drinking crowd.
